LONG JOHN NEBEL

Long John Nebel was a pioneering radio talk show host best known for his late-night paranormal-themed program, The Long John Nebel Show.

Born in Chicago, he initially worked as an auctioneer and in advertising before launching his radio career in 1954 on New York’s WOR-AM.  Nebel’s overnight show became a cultural phenomenon, focusing on UFOs, conspiracy theories, the occult, and fringe science—decades before such topics gained mainstream attention. He hosted a wide range of guests, from scientists to self-proclaimed alien abductees, fostering a space for open and often bizarre discussion. Nebel’s unique mix of skepticism and curiosity influenced future paranormal broadcasters, including Art Bell.

Long John Nebel’s style helped define the talk radio format, earning him a loyal late-night audience. Despite health challenges in later years, he remained an impactful figure in talk radio until his death in 1978. His legacy endures in modern paranormal and alternative media.

In 2023, Long John Nebel received a Legends Induction into the Radio Hall of Fame.
