EVE ARDEN

Born Eunice Quedens in 1912, Eve Arden was an experienced movie and stage actress before entering radio in 1945 on The Danny Kaye Show.

She subsequently costarred with Jack Haley and Jack Carson on The Sealtest Village Store before CBS President William S. Paley offered her the title role on a new series called Our Miss Brooks. As Connie Brooks, the dryly witty high-school English teacher beset with humorous and romantic difficulties, Eve Arden was a sensation. Her performance inspired letters of commiseration from thousands of real-life teachers and led to numerous speaking engagements before the PTA and other educational groups.Miss Brooks’ adventures invariably centered around Madison High School’s blowhard principal, Osgood Conklin (played by Gale Gordon), or the bashful biology teacher, Mr. Boynton (played by Jeff Chandler). The show’s strong supporting cast was abetted by Richard Crenna as young student Walter Denton, Leonard Smith as school basketball star Stretch Snodgrass and Jane Morgan as Mrs. Davis, Miss Brooks’ addled landlady.

Our Miss Brooks lasted from 1948 to 1957 on radio, with overlapping success on television from 1952 to 1956.

Eve Arden died on November 12, 1990.

She was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1995.
